The Eighth Day

NOTE: This is a re-post of something that I wrote in 2009.  People really need to connect with these wonderful artisans of literature called Eighth Day Books.  In a world that is being dumbed down, the timely and timeless treasures of the centuries are ready to influence and spur a new generation on towards integrity, character and excellence.  You must get their catalog…!

The “eighth day” is the fulfillment of all time, it is the gateway to eternity.

The number eight was, for ancient Christianity, the symbol of the Resurrection, for it was on the day after the Sabbath, and so the eighth day, that Christ rose from the tomb. Furthermore, the seven days of the week are the image of the time of this world, and the eighth day of life everlasting. Sunday is the liturgical commemoration of the eighth day, at the same time a memorial of the Resurrection and a prophecy of the world to come …”
J. Danielou, The Bible and the Liturgy

… an eighth and eternal day, consecrated by the Resurrection of Christ … There we shall rest and see, see and love, love and praise.”
-St. Augustine, City of God, Book 22, Chapter 30

Allow me to introduce you to another “friend”,  a place where the quest for knowledge and wisdom can be found, a cyber-place which can aid us in our path to fullness in Christ and His Church.  A few posts back I mentioned the positive influence that Ancient Faith Radio has had on my Christian pilgrimage to the Church.  Here is yet another veritable goldmine in wisdom; our friends at Eighth Day Books.

The calling of a disciple of Christ is to engage in the daily spiritual struggle against the devil, the world, and our flesh so that we can attain “theosis”; to become by grace what we cannot become on our own… to partake of the Divine nature of Christ i.e. to think, to act, and to become like Christ right here, and right now (2 Peter).  This titanic struggle is not easy.  It’s  not for the faint of heart.  And yes – it’s hard.  But it is filled with Joy – and better yet, we do not walk alone!  In fact millions of other saints have journeyed before us in  this same path toward fullness in Christ, and as mentioned earlier, the certainty that we have is that we are not alone.  Saints untold have left “footprints” for us to follow; clear pathways through the dark forests, paved trails through the valley of the shadow of death.  All for us, for our journey, so that one day we can finish our pilgrimage here, and rest with them in paradise.  And we leave behind us, for those that follow us,  the same path we walked…and on it goes – generation after generation until He comes again.

Eighth Day Books is a treasure of inestimable worth.  I like them because they are real people, and not part of a corporate monster like Amazon and others like them. So go ahead, open this  “gift box” and plunge  into the depths of wisdom and knowledge, for in searching for wisdom, we soon come to discover the essence of true Wisdom – which  is not a “thing” but rather a Person!  Christ Himself – and when we come to Him we’ll  know freedom and joy beyond belief!   A freedom that this world can never give.

Discover the voice of the Church and Her words from yesterday, and they’ll enable us to live in certainty and stability today.   You are in for a treat.
