Amusing Ourselves to Death

In these last days, men will give themselves up to foolishness and frivolity, to vain pursuits and various and sundry lusts of the flesh, unable and unwilling to control their unbridled passions, walking into death traps without even knowing it.  Save but for the Divine gifts of repentance, contrition and the mercy of God… there is no hope – for anyone or anything.  Far from being a negative or dour prognosticator, I believe that these days in which we live, though they be dark and apparently are becoming even darker… these will be the very days in which the Son of God, and His glorious Church will shine unlike any other time in church history.  Though She will be small and few, and mocked and scorned, She will be glorious and will counter the foolish wisdom of the world and her leaders.  But the invitation remains – and it will cost you your life:  repent and believe in the Gospel… die daily to self and receive new life… life in Christ.   There is no other way than death to the world, death to the flesh, death to my passions… but through this death comes eternal life.

“Which would you rather have?  A few of foolish fleeting seconds of pleasure here or the glory of eternal paradise with the Creator of the entire Universe? “

Put me down for the latter.

The brilliant C.S. Lewis puts it so much better than me…

We are half-hearted creatures, fooling around with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea.  We are far too easily pleased.”

Lord in an age of foolish selfishness, break our wills, our disobedience, and conform our minds and hearts to follow hard after Thee, for Thou alone are the lover of mankind and alone are worthy of our praise, adoration and obedience.  Glory to Thee O Lord – Lover of Mankind – Glory to Thee.
