More signs that our generation perhaps is nearing the end…? and entering a time when …men will become lovers of vain and foolish things… like in Vancouver. Over what? A game. A game on ice, with blades, a rubber puck, wood sticks and a net… Oh that we would put such passion, emotion and energy into following God, curing sickness, feeding the poor, living morally, loving spouses, nurturing children, building marriages, and yes, like Miss America says ‘creating world peace’. Loving sport is one thing. Idolizing it, and its players is sin. In this Canadian story I wonder how much it was due to an unholy excessive exchange, where beer ruled over brains?
Hockey is a game. A good game… but still, just a game. But riots, looting, fires? The question remains would the ‘fans’ of Boston behaved in like manner should their club lose? In all fairness to our Canadian neighbors we readily admit that America is no better, for we have our sports idols aplenty and have worshipped at the same altars of rioting and lawlessness on more than one occasion in our storied two century existence. In our present culture it’s not whether one will ‘worship’ or not, the question is ‘whom’ or ‘what’ you will worship.
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? Matthew 16:26
But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people 2 Timothy 3:1f
Moreover, I saw under the sun that in the place of justice, even there was wickedness, and in the place of righteousness, even there was wickedness. I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked, for there is a time for every matter and for every work. I said in my heart with regard to the children of man that God is testing them that they may see that they themselves are but beasts. For what happens to the children of man and what happens to the beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity. All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return. Who knows whether the spirit of man goes upward and the spirit of the beast goes down into the earth? So I saw that there is nothing better than that a man should rejoice in his work, for that is his lot. Who can bring him to see what will be after him? Ecclesiastes
