An enemy of New Ideas?

rock and water“The other day a well-known writer, otherwise well-informed, said that the Catholic Church is always the enemy of new ideas. It probably did not occur to him that his own remark was not exactly in the nature of a new idea. It is one of the notions that Catholics have to be continually refuting, because it is such a very old idea… Nine out of ten of what we call new ideas are simply old mistakes. The Catholic Church has for one of her chief duties that of preventing people from making these old mistakes; from making them over and over again forever, as people always do if they are left to themselves.” —G.K. Chesterton  From “Why I Am a Catholic”, collected in Vol. II of the Collected Works.

Most, if not all of culture’s ‘new ideas‘ are in fact ‘old ideas‘ that the Apostles, Church Fathers and Ecumenical councils have found contrary to God’s revealed and objective truth and have rejected over the centuries as contrary to salvation.  It is precisely for this very reason that an objective Church, the Body of Christ, rejects the subjective lies and ‘new/old’ desires, of every generation.  The overarching purpose of the “Rock” of Holy Tradition upon which Christ’s church stands is that it is doesn’t move.  It’s ageless, timeless and immovable – it is teaching and truth that remains solid even amidst fast-moving water. Thus it is always certain, and this brings comfort, peace, and joy in a world gone mad questioning everything.  For instance: Life, all life, is sacred.  We must not kill.  Men and women marry.  Families are created out of sacrificial love, not personal porn, and children are a blessing – and not a burdensome curse.  We ought never be surprised that the wisdom of Heaven is diametrically opposed to the deception of Satan – whose goal is to lie and steal.

In the midst of a culture that is constantly wavering, changing, and self-justifying every behavior  – we have been given an Apostolic faith, Holy Tradition, the immovable truth of the Church that provides safety, sanity, and eternity to those who embrace it, and madness to everyone who would reject it.

But the choice is yours to make….

So…choose you this day whom you will serve.  “...But as for me, and for my house, we will serve the Lord…”

+ anaphora – laetare
